Tracklist databases and related sites

Please note that the projects and databases listed below are not necessarily compatible to threeTIX or to each other. This listing is just an approach of showing you what's on.

XMCD, CDDB

The idea of sharing audio CD tracklists over the WWW goes back to Ti Kan who created the xmcd CD player and database and to Steve Sherf who wrote the server software for CDDB.
Meanwhile, the CDDB databases are commercialized and turned to gracenote. Besides this, CDDB tends to be slow, restrictive and monopolistic: It does not allow client applications to use other databases.
Step by step - they even forbid read access for those applications which brought them ten-thousands of uploads.

freedb.org

To ensure non-commercial, unrestricted sharing of xmcd compatible data, freedb.org was founded.
freedb.org calls itself "a free approach to cddbp" (CD database protocol).
There are several mirror servers all over the globe.
Compatible CD player applications are available for most operating systems.

MusicBrainz

The former cd index database was a project for a free offer and exchange of CD audio tracklists. Cd index migrated to MusicBrainz where not only CD-recognition but even e.g. MP3-recognition will be available for tracklist exchange.

cdplayer.ini page

The cdplayer.ini page offers CD audio tracklists for the Windows 95/98 application cdplayer.exe.
However, the info has to be up-/downloaded and selected manually and mostly with cut and paste.
