Troubleshooting (3): Provider uses wrong certificate

If your Deluxe CD Player cannot download CD track info from the Web, it may receive a certificate string from the server that is considered as beeing wrong.

temporary files
Check: does Deluxe CD Player leave files in your temporary directory (e.g. "C:\temp\" or "C:\windows\temp\")?
The files have names like cddxxxx.TMP, where xxxx may be any character/number combination.
If yes, and the files contain the information you were actually looking for, Deluxe CD Player could download the data from the WWW, but did not accept the certificate string in that file.
This may be caused if
  • The provider certificate is wrong or not given.
  • The provider name in the registry is misspelled (exact case match is necessary).
  • The provider url was not used as expected (e.g. by redirecting).
  • You have installed Deluxe CD Player manually (e.g. by copying file by file from your old PC).

PLC reports 'Provider uses wrong certificate'
Symptom: if you use the 'check providers' with the tool PLC, it reports 'Provider uses wrong certificate' - even for the threeTIX server.
This occurs especially on installations of Deluxe CD Player on Windows XP.

Cause

To "verify" if a Deluxe CD data provider is "ok", the certificate string sent from that provider is compared with the result of some Deluxe CD internal encryption routines.

Due to United States export control regulations, keys derived for that encryption were 40 bits long. Meanwhile, after relaxation of the regulations, 128-bit keys are used.
Thus, a different result in this encryption makes Deluxe CD Player "believe" that the certificate string is wrong.

The problem may occur on Windows Me, Windows XP and possibly installations that got newer default encryption routines (e.g. by installing a new version of IE).

Solution

  1. Users running Deluxe CD Player on Windows XP (and possibly Windows Me) should use a different registry file. Please see updated article Howto connect Deluxe CD player with threeTIX.

  2. Download the tool PLC.
Since version 2.5.3 it may determine the right 'cipher strength' and adjust your registry settings.
